Can You Tell Me What These Flowers Are?

When the poplar tree died and they ground out the stump, there was a big, gaping hole in the ground. My husband trotted off to Home Depot (as husbands are wont to do) and bought a packet of wildflower seeds (which husbands aren’t generally known for).

He dumped out the packet into the hole, then threw it away.

Now, we have this in our front yard:

And it’s really pretty, right?

But here’s the thing . . . I’d like to know what all those flowers are. I’ve taken my best guess for each and I’m thinking I could use a little help. So, if you have an idea, leave it in the comments.

This one, I think, is a Cosmos (not Cosmo . . . get your head outta the liquor cabinet):

Flower No. 1

Flower No. 1

But, I think this is a Cosmos, too. (Made with Cointreau.)

Flower No. 2

Flower No. 2

This, I think, is a California Poppy (unrelated to the poppy extract sold elsewhere in the City):

Flower No. 3

Flower No. 3

This could be a scabiosa (not the kind on your knee):

Flower No. 4

Flower No. 4

I’m sure this is a cornflower. Belongs in the midwest, I know, but here it is in Baltimore.

Flower No. 5

Flower No. 5

I have no idea what this little guy is:

Flower No. 6.

Flower No. 6.

Or this guy:

Flower No. 7

Flower No. 7

Or even this guy:

Flower No. 8

Flower No. 8

I know there are Four O’Clocks in that there patch, but I can’t seem to catch ’em while they’re open.

There are more flowers coming everyday. If you could help me identify these flowers, I’d be forever in your debt (but I will not pay you).

Thanks,

Kathryn

  1. Is number 6 Spanish Needles? I am pretty sure that number 7 is a Coreopsis. Number 8 may be a Hairy Rose Mallow.
